What is it about farmhouse style that’s so appealing?

The echoes of a slower, simpler life undistracted by tech wizardry?  Sun-drenched interiors?  Items that are not too precious to touch?

Whatever the draw, it seems stronger than ever to modern sensibilities. Even if you live in an apartment or 70’s ranch house, you can still pull in some comfortable farmhouse elements.

Utilitarian items on display: enamel bread box, gingham plates, crockery visible in glass door cabinets. The wooden vent hood and natural wreath have a non-urban feel.

More utility serving a decorative purpose! In front of a useful chalkboard backing, colorful sifters, strainers, scales and tins in this wood shelf say, “We’re not too formal. We are fun!! Come in and  have a coke!!”

You can’t go wrong in a farmhouse interior with wooden crates, trays, and boxes. Chipping paint or stencils of old advertising–all the better!  Use them to hold needed items (remotes, throws, toys) or a vignette like this one with vintage books. Trays are my secret weapon–they make everything look neater and more intentional!

Weathered finishes, white crockery and beadboard make for a vintage, collected-over-time look. Incorporate some old baskets, bottles and mason jars, and you’re on your way to a style that’s comforting and welcoming.
