Signs. They’re everywhere.
You know, “The Rules of This Family”, “Live, Laugh, Love”, and (my personal favorite) “I’m Sorry for What I Said When I Was Hungry”.
I love ’em, too–they’re funny and sentimental and sometimes just what you need for a certain wall spot.
But only SOMETIMES. Because face it, when a trend gains popularity, it often gets overused. So let’s see what typography effects we could use besides (or occasionally, in addition to) the ubiquitous sign, shall we?
1. Favorite numerals
This bold 2 might reflect the number of family members or the number of children–or maybe your LUCKY number. You can find big graphic numbers at flea markets. You can also have extra large ones printed out at the copy shop. Mixing them up in a montage of items on the wall gives them added visual appeal.
2. Initials
Initials of your loved ones’ names or your last name are a great, personalized alternative to mass produced signs. Old neon or other metal letters are quirky conversation starters. Or buy big papier mache’ ones at the hobby store and decoupage paper over them.
3. Fun or meaningful 3D words
Or maybe “fun” AS a word–works for me! These letters dictate our attitude poolside.
There’s a lot of L-O-V-E at our house. We could also have displayed the word C-H-A-O-S. What word would you use at your place?
(Hey, remember what I said about big numbers? What about a pouf made with them?)
4. Special dates
Try incorporating memorable dates into your decorating, like kids’ birthdays, adoption dates, or your wedding anniversary. Online shops can custom make these for you, or if you have some cool fonts, you could print them out yourself and frame.
5. A bit of history
Sometimes you have to go with what you love, and a favorite collectible of mine is old church signs. In this case, I’m giving myself a pass on using signs in the decor. And if you love the thrill of the hunt, whether for old service station or soft drink signs, I’m giving you a pass, too, to display your treasures in your decor. These are unique and authentic pieces of Americana. They deserve a place of honor!
So! The word on the street is, typography is definitely on trend. Try some of these suggestions for incorporating it into your decor in new ways. For other pointers or design help with projects you’ve been considering, let’s talk!
