How to Make a Rustic Home Feel Fresh and Personal

I love the wood beams and stone fireplace in this home. But I also love pretty wallpaper, gold mirrors, and a bedroom with some color.
Fortunately, we don’t have to choose just one.
For this home, the mix is what makes it interesting. While rustic details connect the spaces, each room has its own personality. Plus, my client had a very specific dream for the spare bedroom: a Louis Vuitton theme.
Let’s take a look.

The living room has some big features: a tall stone fireplace, exposed wood beams, and a vaulted ceiling. Together, they give the room so much character.
Because those details have a strong presence, softer furnishings help balance the space. A lighter rug and greenery bring that softness in, while dark bookcases give us places to display smaller pieces.
If your rustic home feels too dark or heavy, you may not need to change everything. Instead, try lighter fabrics and a few softer touches around what’s already there.
Sometimes a different mix is all it takes.
One of my favorite combinations is warm wood with something a little dressier. In the entry, for example, the wood console sits beneath a gold mirror and a sparkling chandelier.
Each piece brings something different. Yet they still feel comfortable together.

Even with rustic architecture, there’s room for a little sparkle.
If you love a pretty mirror or light fixture, don’t pass it up just because it doesn’t fit perfectly into your “style.” Rather than getting stuck on the label, look at how it works with the things around it.
The dark cabinets, stone range hood, and bold pattern on the island give this kitchen plenty of interest. With that much happening, the accessories can stay simple.
A few useful pieces on the shelves and something pretty on the counter help finish the room. At the same time, leaving open space makes the kitchen easier to use.

Before you buy more decor, look at what your room already has. Maybe it needs a finishing touch. Or perhaps it needs a little breathing room.
My client wanted to use her existing bedroom furniture. So, instead of starting over, I supplied the art, bedding, and accessories to bring everything together.
The detailed wood headboard gives the room character, while lighter bedding and blue accents freshen up the space.
I love helping people see their furniture differently. Sometimes you still love a piece, but you’re tired of the room around it.
Before replacing it, try changing the bedding, artwork, or lighting. You may find that what you already have works beautifully with a fresh mix.

Now, this room was a little different.
My client’s dream was a spare bedroom with a Louis Vuitton theme. She had already bought the furniture, so my job was to finish the room with art, bedding, and accessories.
Rich browns, red accents, and gold details give it that dressier feel. Meanwhile, layered bedding makes the room inviting for guests.
And then there are the purses.
We included a huge display case for her purse collection. Rather than keeping them tucked away, we made them part of the room.
I love that this space reflects something she enjoys. After all, your home is allowed to celebrate your interests—even when those interests come with handles.
The home office has blue floral wallpaper and a teal chair. Meanwhile, lighter furniture gives the pattern room to show up without everything competing for attention.

This room has its own personality, and I love that.
If you’ve been wanting to try a colorful wallpaper, an office can be a fun place to use it. After all, you’re going to spend time in there.
Make it somewhere you enjoy being.

Here’s what I want people to know: you can love more than one thing.
Rustic wood can work with a gold mirror. Likewise, furniture you already own can feel fresh with different bedding and art.
You can even have a Louis Vuitton–inspired guest room in a home with a stone fireplace and wood beams. The rooms don’t have to be identical to belong together.
Instead of starting over because everything doesn’t match, look for ways to connect the pieces you love.
As a Rockwall interior designer serving the Dallas area, I help people figure out that mix so their homes feel comfortable, beautiful, and personal.
If you have furniture you want to keep—or a dream for a room that you don’t know how to pull off—we’d love to help.
