You’ve probably seen the reports of studies that show how being grateful can improve your health. I’m not a doctor or research scientist, but I think we all have some anecdotal evidence to support this idea, not only from our own lives and but from observing others.
I hope you all have a meaningful Thanksgiving, and please join me in my continuing quest to find (and be grateful for) the good in every day!
I’m so thankful for my loved ones! We’ve seen especially in the last couple of years how critical the safety net of family and community are.
When you’re gathering around the platters of turkey and sweet potatoes, just go ahead and determine now to smile when your dear old uncle tells AGAIN that famous embarrassing family story. Family grounds us and helps to cushion the blow of some of life’s difficulties, and we can be grateful for them. (I know–some more than others. But still.)
Add to the list our friends, especially those in our faith community, and we have many reasons to give thanks.
Like Dorothy said in Oz, “there’s no place like home”. No matter if it’s an apartment or a mansion, humble or grand, we can be thankful for a place to lay our heads–and build our dreams.
Heard the proverb “Comparison is the thief of joy”? When you are grateful for the home you have, you can enjoy it without envy that you don’t have THAT house. Sure, improve it where you can, have fun decorating and making it uniquely your own–but most of all, make memories there. That’s treasure that lasts.
That gorgeous sunset. A child’s smile. The friendly driver waving you into the opening. When we can be fully in the moment and appreciate the good that’s right before us, it gives us a reserve of joy we can draw on when the hard days come (and of course they will). “See?” we can tell ourselves, “Life isn’t so bad!”
I, for one, am grateful for a day of thanks to help me recalibrate as I head into some potentially stressful holiday moments ahead! You, too?
